Despite accepting aid from China to fight the coronavirus, the president of Serbia writes that his country is committed to a pro-Western foreign policy.

SINCE THE CORONAVIRUS pandemic was declared, China, Europe, and the United States have provided assistance to many countries around the world as part of their "coronavirus diplomacy." But some of these countries, such as Serbia, have been unfairly questioned over their willingness to request and receive support from a variety of partners.

BEOGRAD, 7. maja (Tanjug) - Srbija se na međunarodnoj sceni u prethodnih nekoliko godina ponaša izuzetno racionalno i dobro balansira svoja očekivanja i realnosti u odnosima Beograda i Prištine, kaže direktorka CEAS-a Jelena Milić povodom poruka koje su se mogle čuti na Samitu EU-Zapadni Balkan.

Na neuobičajeno oštar odijum među zapadnim donosiocima odluka naišla je mogućnost da Beograd i Priština postignu multidimenzionalni sveobuhvatni sporazum zasnovan na validnim argumentima Srbije i znatno promenjenim geopolitičkim okolnostima, izjavila je za Kosovo Onlajn direktorka Centra za evroatlanske studije Jelena Milić.

VAŠINGTON, 5. maja (Tanjug) - Ekonomski uticaj pandemije korona virusa u siromašnim oblastima poput Balkana biće dalekosežan i predstavljaće test društvene otpornosti, ali će pružiti priliku za oslanjanje na sebe i obilovanje sredstvima, od kojih bi šire koristi mogla da ima Evropa, ocenjuje viši saradnik vašingtonskog Centra za analizu Evropske politike (CEPA) Januš Bugajski.

The Pandemic Has Hit South-Eastern Europe Hard but Opportunities Beckon 
In poor regions like the Balkans, the economic impact of the pandemic will be far-reaching and acutely test social resilience. However, it will also provide opportunities for self-reliance and resourcefulness that could benefit Europe more widely. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) calculate that the economic contraction in the Balkans will range between 3% and 10%. The IMF also forecasts that Balkan economies, which have applied strict lockdowns to contain the pandemic, can start to rebound later this year with a 4.2% uptick in production once social restrictions are relaxed. Several countries are allowing small and medium-sized businesses to reopen in May, while larger public gatherings, including schools, shopping centers, parks, and sports venues will open more gradually if the contagion continues to decrease.

When the great American novelist Mark Twain was on a speaking tour in in London in 1897, someone started a rumor that he was gravely ill. Twain later learned of press reports that he had died, prompting a characteristic reply: “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

Kada je veliki američki romanopisac Mark Tven gostovao u Londonu kao predavač 1897. godine, neko je pustio glas da je pisac ozbiljno bolestan. Tven je kasnije čuo da su neke novine izvestile čak i da je umro, što ga je navelo da odgovori na sebi svojstven način: „Vesti o mojoj smrti su uveliko preterane.“
